Social Distancing Ideas

Social Distancing Ideas

Movie Night (and sacks)!

Most of your favorite streaming devices are releasing new and old favs and if you have Netflix, you can party! www.netflixparty.com allows you to watch your favorites together with a group chat option! I think we all need to schedule a party with and watch Homecoming again together - that’s not for the kids, but you get the point).

Get Outside:

I am truly hoping the weather around here breaks soon and I can get the kids outside.  A park full of children is not social distancing but walking the trails could be perfect.

A few of my favorites:

Ironwoods Park (and nature center) 147th & Mission Road, Leawood, KS

Martha Lafite Thompson Trails Nature Sanctuary, 407 N La Frenz Road, Liberty, MO

Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens a 300 acre nature sanctuary for a wilderness retreat featuring eight natural ecosystems. Paved or wood chip pathway, the Arboretum is a picturesque example of Kansas City's beauty. Free on Tuesdays and every day for visitors 5 years old and younger

Native Hoofed Animal Enclosure in Lee’s Summit. You can take carrots and apples and feed the Elk and Bison and walk the trails.

Letter Writing:

How cool would it be to bring back the pen pal and teach your children how to write a letter! I am working with my son’s teacher to get address of the families who want to participate and start sending mail! Also, don’t go and buy stamps! Get them online or at an ATM.

Cooking:

With all the panic buying, the stores are sparse, don’t forget the online options. Having healthy meals delivered to your door.  They come with recipe cards and you can learn to make something new or teach your children to cook.

Crafting:

  1. Play dough with cookie cutters – you’ll be surprised how long this keeps them occupied(either at the table or if you have little ones, throw a trash bag on the floor to keep your carpet safe.

  2. Sensory box – there are a million ideas on Pinterest, but think textures (rice, pasta, small toys, rocks, cotton balls, beads, buttons, leaves…etc). .

  3. And since y’all will have so many toilet paper rolls, here’s 10 things to do with them: https://redtri.com/things-to-make-with-a-toilet-paper-roll/

  4. Large roll paper for painting or coloring

Plants:

We are need some clean air, add some plants to your house or start your garden. With most of us figuring out how to home school right now, some hands-on learning is ideal.

Games:

Good old fashion fort for camping in the living room, indoor hide & seek, indoor treasure hunt, board games, uno flip is one of our new favs.

Do the thing you’ve been avoiding:

Closet cleaning – my children probably have 4 seasons of out grown clothes sitting around right now. Maybe create a capsule wardrobe for when you return to the office.

Do the thing you’ve been wanting to do:

Start a blog, vlog, podcast (I mean you basically have a captive audience now), write your book. If you have a specific skill and teach something right now, your talent is needed. If you are a creative and can share an escape from all the COVID-19 coverage and can entertain instead - you are needed.

Virtual Things:

  • Try Zoom or Google Hangout so your children can have a play date with their friends or cousins.

  • Load Dulingo - it’s kid-friendly and will help them grasp the basics of a new language.

  • Youtube Tutorials - My girl and I are brushing up on our sign language skills everyday.

  • TikTok !! If you have kids, they are definitely doing it! Join them!
